Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association Applauds Federal Aviation Administration’s Proposed Rule on Drug and Alcohol Testing at Foreign Repair Stations

CENTENNIAL, Colo. – February 12, 2024 – On February 8, the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), a craft-specific, independent aviation union, submitted a statement for the record to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This statement expresses support for the proposed rule-making on implementing a drug and alcohol testing standard for maintenance employees who work on U.S. aircraft at certificated foreign repair stations. AMFA’s position is always to prioritize the safety of the aircraft and the passengers traveling aboard. Any work being performed by employees at foreign repair stations must meet the same standards as domestic employees when it comes to drug and alcohol testing. The testing rules set forth in both the House and Senate bills now match those imposed on maintenance technicians who work on aircraft in the U.S.

“AMFA has worked steadfastly for years to combat foreign outsourcing,” said AMFA National President Bret Oestreich. “In an effort to firmly stand by our motto, ‘safety in the air begins with quality maintenance on the ground,’ AMFA will continue our efforts to make sure those foreign repair station employees meet background check and testing requirements with the ultimate objective of aircraft safety.”
