IG Report on FAA Foreign Repair Station Oversight
On May 1, 2013, we [the Office of Inspector General] issued our final report on the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) risk-based oversight of aircraft repair stations. Currently, FAA is responsible for overseeing nearly 4,800 repair stations used worldwide by U.S air carriers. We found that while FAA developed a risk assessment process to aid repair station inspectors in identifying areas of greatest concern, its oversight continues to emphasize completing mandatory inspections instead of targeting resources where they are needed based on risk.

National Director's April 2013 Update
April 30, 2013 -- On April 3, Southwest Airlines (SWA) formally announced their plans to close the line stations of Philadelphia and Sacramento by the end of 2013. The signs are becoming clearer that we have entered a new era, an era in which SWA’s actions reflect genuine hostility toward your job security. I hope all of you have taken the time to read the SWA Membership Solidarity Letter that was posted on the National Website for a greater perspective on the situation. This announcement, coupled with the fourth-line of maintenance arbitration resolution proceedings, has caused the immediate contract negotiation dates to be re-allocated to address these issues.

Department of Labor Judge Rules in Favor of Aircraft Maintenance Whistleblower
April 26, 2013 -- In our previous letter we outlined the federal airline whistleblower law, AIR 21, and we explained that in order to prevail, a complainant would be required to prove:

- That an adverse action was taken against the complainant; and
- That the protected activity was a contributing factor in the adverse action taken.

Southwest Airlines Membership Solidarity
April 17, 2013 -- The signs are becoming clearer that we have entered a new era, an era in which Southwest Airline’s (SWA) actions reflect genuine hostility toward your job security. Nothing could be clearer in our CBA than the mandated creation of a fourth line of heavy maintenance once the fleet size reaches 621 aircraft.

AMFA - SWA Technician Negotiations Update #9
April 9, 2013 -- We resumed negotiations on April 2 with the Company at the Mecca Meeting Room in Dallas, Texas. We began discussions where we left off in our last session with Article 8; the International Field Service issue remains the topic of discussions. We currently have language in LOA #1 that gives us ownership over “all international emergency field service where parts are required to return the aircraft to airworthiness.”

Wendell H. Ford Aviation Investment and Reform Act for the 21st Century - AIR 21
March 29, 2013 -- An update was recently issued which summarized recent sanctions issued by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) against AirTran for retaliation against a pilot whistleblower. In response to that update, we have received inquiries requesting more information related to the underlying law – the Wendell H. Ford Aviation Investment and Reform Act for the 21st Century, which is commonly referred to as “AIR 21.”

Press Release: AMFA Supports Flight Attendants' Opposition to TSA Rule Change
March 7, 2013 -- Recently, the TSA announced a rule change that will allow items such as small knives aboard aircraft and in the cabin. Although in principle AMFA is behind any rule change that helps make the security screening process for airline employees and the flying public more efficient, it should not come at the expense of their respective personal safety.
