National Director Update - June 2020
Updated On: Jul 189, 2020

July 7, 2020

Dear Members:

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July, which marks 244 years of independence for this great Nation we live in. Can you believe this wild year is half over? In June 2020 your AMFA Officers and Representatives were very busy trying to keep informed on the erratic operational activity at AMFA represented carriers pertaining to Early-outs, Voluntary Separations, Emergency Time Off, and AMFA protected work.  Our technicians at all carriers are now in the phase of transiting from short-term storage to return to revenue service and increased flight schedules, thus our technicians’ workloads have increased.

Our Local Safety & Standards Chairman continue to be actively involved at all three carriers to reinforce adherence to workplace cleaning protocol. We continue to urge you to utilize PPE, practice social distancing, remember safety is always the priority, and follow the CDC recommendations and guidelines. If you have any questions or concerns about COVID-19 safety procedures or protocols, please contact your Local Safety and Standards Chairman.

AMFA proudly contributes to talks related to the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, and we are continuing to advocate for our craft in COVID-19 related discussions. We encourage members to monitor the secure Legislative Updates page of the AMFA National website for more details.

The AMFA National Officer Election commenced on June 30 in accordance with the AMFA Constitution to fill the positions of National Director, Assistant National Director, National Secretary/ Treasurer, National Safety and Standards Director, Region I Director, and Region II Director. All candidates in this election had the opportunity to submit a candidate profile, which can be viewed on the Elections and Referenda page of the National website. Any member who has not received their personalized voting credentials via email or mail should contact the Administration Director at 720-744-6629 or elections@amfanatl.com. The election tally will be at 10am et on August 10, 2020.

Southwest Airlines continues to pursue the two federal lawsuits against AMFA. SWA has still not dismissed its last two remaining claims for monetary damages against AMFA National and AMFA Local 11. We will continue updating you via the secure Legal Updates (Members Only) page of the National website as developments unfold.

Reminder: the FAA Hotline reporting system may be utilized to report concerns of aviation safety: https://hotline.faa.gov/. We must realize our grave responsibility as FAA certified airman to exercise our judgement on the airworthiness of aircraft and equipment. We, therefore, pledge unyielding adherence to these precepts for the advancement of public safety of aviation and for the dignity for our craft.

As always, I ask you please be safe and to stay engaged with your union and officers. For more information regarding AMFA and the airline industry, please visit the AMFA National Website at www.amfanational.org. Additionally, please monitor your respective carrier page of the AMFA National website for further airline specific updates and details: Alaska Airlines Updates, Horizon Air Updates, Southwest Airlines Updates. Our most determined efforts will only succeed with your continued support and participation – please stay informed.

Sincerely,

Bret Oestreich
National Director
