December 21, 2001 To the Membership of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association; The events of 911 have served as a reminder of the need to educate ourselves on the threat of terrorism in our world today. Security within a complex structure such as Northwest Airlines is fortified only with awareness and educated understanding of the threat itself and the individual requirement of all employees to follow a security plan. Northwest Airlines is required to maintain compliance with Federal Aviation Agency Security Directives, has developed a security plan, and in addition employs a team of security experts to combat this threat of terrorism. AMFA National Safety and Standards recently submitted a proposal to Northwest corporate safety, as an addition to the NWA security plan currently in place, for a security focus group comprised of representatives from The International Brotherhood of Teamsters (ITB), Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), Airline Pilots Association (ALPA), and the International Association of Machinists (IAM) to address security issues within Northwest Airlines as a working group. I am pleased to inform you that Richard Anderson, Chief Executive Officer, NWA and Ken Hylander, V.P. Safety and Engineering, Chief Safety Officer, NWA have approved the formation of the proposed security focus group, the purpose being, to work with Northwest Airlines to focus on security issues from every perspective of our work environment. This focus group will work as a team addressing the security concerns of each labor organization in a constructive manner, working towards implementing and maintaining the safest environment possible for employees of Northwest Airlines, as well as our customers. I wish to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a joyous holiday season and a prosperous, safe, and secure New Year. Sincerely, Frank Boksanske AMFA National Safety and Standards Director c.c. NEC Local Safety and Standards Chairman Local Presidents Local Airline Representatives |
