Mesaba Negotiation Update- 7/15/04

Negotiations between AMFA and Mesaba Airlines reconvened 7/12/04 through 7/15/04.

Monday 7/12 – session was a half-day session that started at 1 pm. The Company presented an Article 9 proposal tied to the settling of several outstanding grievances regarding insufficient rest and resulting pay as well as the applicability of the overtime article to field-trips.

Tuesday 7/13 – this day's session was spent reviewing the company's Article 9 proposal. It was determined that the article did not serve to protect the membership sufficiently in regards to pay, rest, scheduling, etc. This is a topic of major concern to the membership at all bases, and that message is being communicated by the Negotiating committee. After the discussion, AMFA determined that no further progress could be made this session and moved to table Article 9. AMFA presented a package proposal containing Articles 4,17, 21(Q), and 25.

Wednesday 7/14 – AMFA negotiators met with Mediator Fred Lief, to discuss the article 13 stalemate, and to determine areas of Article 13 where compromise could be found. Mr. Schafer had to leave at 11 for a meeting pertaining to attendance policy in a DTW issue. Upon his return, Article 13 continued to be worked. That afternoon Mr. Lief submitted our possible solutions to the issues in Article 13 to the Company.

Thursday 7/15 – after having considered our package proposal mentioned in Tuesdays entry, the Company returned a proposal in which they wanted to include Articles 2 and 3. AMFA is very concerned, and feels Articles 2 and 3 should not be wrapped into a package proposal. AMFA Negotiators met with Mr. Lief in the afternoon again and expressed concerns about the addition of Articles 2 and 3 in the package proposals. Mr. Lief departed to relay the Committee's Article 9 concerns, and possible resolutions to the Company.

The next negotiation session is scheduled for DTW on August 9-12, 2004. The company has refused to negotiate at the session scheduled for August 17, 18, and 19 in MSP; therefore, this session will be cancelled. Further negotiation sessions will be scheduled at a later date.
